School update 23-26 Nov

This art and craft work took two weeks to complete.

Each child was given the opportunity to explore with recycled items such as empty boxes and toilet rolls.

The teacher showed them the toy car and helped to describe the parts such as body frame, wheels, windows and etc.

The teacher guided them to pick the items and glued them together to look like a car. This hands-on activity is called modeling. Glad to hear the children say ‘It’s a car!’ after completed the art work.

Practical life exercises are designed to teach children life skills. They help our toddlers develop their intelligence and responsible contact with his/her surroundings.

This week the teacher introduced an activity of opening and closing of boxes with three different sizes, for example the toothpaste box. It seems easy for us adults to open and close, however for these young kids it’s a challenging task. It is heartening to see that they are trying hard and focused.

School Update 16-20 Nov

This week, the children revised the letter sounds e, m & z as well as rote counting/sandpaper 1, 2 & 3.

They were more familiar with the sandpaper 1, 2 & 3.

Most of them were able to recognize the numbers too.

For children to develop their physical skills, they must be given ample opportunity to practice their gross motor control, fine motor control and overall balance and coordination.

Hence, without fail, every morning /evening besides going for a stroll the children also played on the climbing structures at the playground. They also engaged in indoor game like balancing the ‘bean bag’ on their heads too. Look at them.. They are enjoying themselves!!

Hypothyroidism

Overview
Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the body lacks enough thyroid hormone. The thyroid gland is located in the neck and produces thyroid hormones. These hormones are important for many of our body’s functions and the proper development and growth of cells in the body. The production of thyroid hormones is also affected by the functioning of certain parts of the brain (hypothalamus and pituitary).

Normal thyroid hormone levels are important for proper growth and development. For infants and young children, untreated hypothyroidism can lead to serious, sometimes permanent developmental problems. If hypothyroidism develops when a child is older, there is less chance of permanent damage to the child.
Because the thyroid hormone is so important to a child’s growth, many countries have routine newborn screening to detect congenital hypothyroidism early. In Singapore, when babies are born, blood is taken from the umbilical cord to screen for hypothyroidism.

The diagnosis of hypothyroidism is made through blood testing. Specialised scans and additional blood tests are usually needed to determine the cause of hypothyroidism.

Causes
Causes include abnormal thyroid gland development, abnormal thyroid hormone production, abnormal development of the brain, the temporary effect of substances that crossed from mother to baby in utero and certain medications.

Symptoms
Symptoms of hypothyroidism vary according to the age of the child. Some babies are born with hypothyroidism (congenital hypothyroidism).

Babies with hypothyroidism may have prolonged jaundice, poor feeding, constipation, cool skin, increased sleepiness, decreased crying, a large tongue and an umbilical hernia.

Over time, if untreated, hypothyroidism can result in poor growth, delayed dentition, delayed development and mental retardation. Hypothyroidism can develop in children and adults of any age. In older children and adults, hypothyroidism can cause a variety of symptoms including tiredness, being more sensitive to cold, mental fatigue, difficulty with learning, poor memory, dry skin and constipation.

Risk Factors
A family history of thyroid disease may increase your child’s risk of getting hypothyroidism. Insufficient iodine in your child’s diet could also cause thyroid problems.

Prevention
Congenital hypothyroidism cannot be prevented.

When To Seek Help
Parents should seek medical advice if their children show signs of prolonged jaundice, poor feeding, constipation, cool skin and increased fatigue. Early detection of hypothyroidism and prompt treatment can prevent any irreversible problems.

Treatment Options
The treatment for hypothyroidism is simple. Your doctor will prescribe synthetic thyroid hormone that is taken orally. Your child will need to have his blood checked regularly for his or her thyroid hormone level so that the dosage can be tailored accordingly. For some children, thyroid hormone treatment may be required for life.

School update 9-13 Nov

They were very excited when Ms Yana show them ‘Happy Monster Band visits France’ from You tube. They sat attentively while watching the programme. The video clip showed the Eiffel Tower, Mona Lisa, croissant and many more. Parents, perhaps you could let your child watch at home too.

Every week, the children will recap the letter sounds from a - z. This week, they revised the letter sounds c, f & i.

This revision will help them to familiarize with the letter sounds and also to identify the letters accurately.

The children had a fun and exciting time at the zoo on Thursday.

They saw Polar Bear feeding , Orang Utan, Otter, Ostrich and wild animals such as tiger, leopard, cheetah and lion.

They were especially excited when they went to the Kidzworld.

There they saw some domestic animals such as horse, pony, rabbit, goat and etc..

Amazingly the children enjoyed the long walk at the zoo!

Lunch at macdonalds

Makes me feel like going on a zoo outing too.

Half day

Took half day off to "rest", with Dylan at school, we had a private afternoon. Went to auntie sally's place to have my pair of spectacles adjusted which took me an hour. We then head to marina square to see what movie we can catch.

After much discussion and calling mummy if she can picked Dylan from school, we bought our tickets. We had a good 2 hours to spend before the show, so shopping it is! Bought a handbag for myself after much pleading. Boy said his legs were breaking after an hour. We came to rest at cafe cartel and have a little coffee and cakes before the show.

His tiramisu & my cheese cake

The show is exciting, there are some parts whereby my tears can't stop flowing. It's a nice show. Immediately after the show, I had developed a major headache and found out my fever returned. We went back home straight away, took my medicine and head for bed, I didn't even wash my face. My fever continue till morning and had came to 39 degrees, went to see the doctor and had got myself 4 days mc, friday to monday. Diagnosis is viral fever, luckily it's not dengue fever.

Sushi tei

Her kagiage with prawn rice and my curry rice

Salmon maki

The waitress saw us taking this plate of salmon skin from the rotating belt, and politely asked if we want to have it fried again, so that it's served hot. Nice service!

We didn't plan to have japanese food, we actually went to the kate spade warehouse sale at ubi cresent, only to find out they have sold out their entire warehouse when it is only the first day out of the 2 days sale. We saw many women continue to stream in only to see their disappointed faces, some were furious and had scolded the event organisor for poor management.

School update 2-6 Nov

Hi Mum & Dad! Below are photos of PG class taken when the class had a ‘full house’ of students present on that day.

We had taken the photo especially for those who did not purchase the class photo last September. This photos will make a memorable one for all students, teachers and parents for the year 2009. Do keep this photo as a keepsake.

Hi friends! My name is Mytri. I have just joined the PG class and I am enjoying school already.

‘Black’, ‘Yellow’, ‘Pink’!! Proud to say that some children are so confident saying the names of coloured papers when they pasted the colour papers provided on the art work.

The teacher showed them the toy car and talk about the parts of the toy car such as the number of wheels, windows, and the colour.

Happy to see that most children are responding to the questions that the teacher posed to them.

This shows that they have develop their communication skills.
