Dosage mistake

Sent boy and Rujie to work before baby Dylan's checkup at NUH yesterday. PIE is always in a slow traffic mode when you are in a rush, they are late for work for 10 minutes, wonder if they will get nag at. It is not my fault, it is the sleepy monster. I woke up the earliest, 6.30 am, to feed, to get ready to go out.

Baby Dylan's checkup is 8.45 am, it was 9.30 am by the time I see the doctor. I was shocked to hear that at the previous visit to the hospital, the nurse and the doctor had a miscommunication with the dosage of the medication. The dosage to be given daily to baby Dylan should be ¾ tablet, but the nurse and the doctor got a communication problem and told me to give 1 and half tablet daily. That is totally absurd, how can this kind of mistake occur? The doctor did assure me that the difference will not affect anything, taking more of the thyroxine will not affect anything, only taking not enough will affect. I am not the doctor, so I lanlan already la! So I asked what the purpose of yesterday's doctor’s visit, answer is: to check that the baby is well. Nothing much is done, I felt that the visit is pretty redundant except for the dosage shock I get.

I am to return to the hospital again 2 weeks later on 29th August, 10.40 am, only then there will be blood test to determine whether to increase or decrease the dosage of the thyroxine. As for the next visit, Jiayi accompany me go ok? Because by then, I would have move back home already.

Baby Dylan is quite cranky for the past few days, he wants attention when he is awake, and wants to be carried. I had a hard time trying to coax him to sleep so that I can rest or do other things. Finally he is sleeping now, or else I wouldn't even have the time to blog now.

All about him

Name: Dylan Zhuang 庄嘉鑫
Age: 25 days

See Baby Dylan got such a complicated chinese name, that is because as told by some master, he is lacking of the gold element, thus the word xin 鑫 (3 golds) is used. His appetite grew, he is crying for his feed about every 2 hours, with each feed lasting for about half an hour. I need to wake up 2 times at night to feed him. He will be visiting NUH this Wednesday for his checkup at 8.45 am. This professer Loke is so nice to squeeze a time for me as his appointment for Wednesday is already full. He gave me privilege and put baby Dylan as the first patient for the day so that I do not need to queue and wait too long but meaning I need to wake up very early tomorrow. >.<

Baby Dylan will turn full month coming Sunday, meaning my confinement will come to an end! Hurray! Boy had booked a total of 35 cakes (each cake cost $5.40) to send to our relatives. We will have a busy day this weekend. Baby Dylan's grandma (boy's mother) won 4D, thanks to his birthday, 8th August 2nd prize.

Thyroid scan at NUH

Baby Dylan was at NUH for his thyroid scan. As warned by the nurse, he had to stop feeding at 4 am till his scan at 9.30 am, because he had to be put on sedation, he will vomit if he is sedated with a full stomach. But because I overslept, his last feed in the morning was at 5.30 am. I couldn’t bear to let him go hungry till he finishes his scan. While at the hospital, baby Dylan refused to take the oral sedation medicine. He refused to swallow and spit out at least half of what he is supposed to take. So in the end, the sedation didn’t work, he didn’t really sleep peacefully, just half asleep only I guess, whining away as he go through the scan. He is hungry I supposed, we gave him a pacifier and he started sucking away and spit it out awhile later when he realise there is no milk? The nurse had to hold on to his head to stop him from moving under the scanning machine. Start feeding him at about 12 pm, and he was discharged at 1 pm. Doctor came and told me that from the scan, he can see that baby Dylan’s thyroid gland is too small, that explains his hypothyroidism. The dose of his thyroxine medication he is taking right now is increased from half a tablet to one and half. He is to return for another checkup 2 weeks later on 15 August.

See baby Dylan's left hand is wrapped like a dumpling, there is a needle poking him, to get ready to insert some dye into his blood to scan his thyroid. Now both his hand is blue black with all the needles and blood taking.

Morning cries

Baby Dylan woke up crying for his feed this morning at 7.30 am, and as usual after his feed, I would expect him to sleep peacefully till at least 2 to 3 hours later. But that is not the case, he began crying every now and then till 11.30 am. He had his diapers changed, had his feed, had his medicine, had his burp, had his temperature taken (no fever) and is still crying. Baby Dylan only sleep peacefully at 11.30 am after he had his bath, was he feeling dirty or just feeling moody?

Baby Dylan will be going to NUH tomorrow for his thyroid scan. Schedule for tommorrow:

8.00 am - Reach NUH

8.30 am - Give oral sedation

9.30 am - Thyroid scan

I am not sure how long the scan will take but baby Dylan can be discharge at late afternoon after some observation and monitoring. We had booked the subsidised ward which is 6 bedded and non-aircon, considering that the ward cost $68 as compared to the 4 bedded with aircon at $230. The thyroid scan original price is $250, but if we choose the subsidised ward, the cost of the scan is reduced to $148. So hopefully after everything adds up, we can use our medisave capping at $450 for all costs. Baby Dylan will have a painful day tomorrow with all the needles, it hurts me to hear him crying in pain.
